HOW DO I KNOW IT’S TIME?
The toughest question I ever asked, and the toughest question I keep getting asked is how does a pet owner know when it’s time to call the Vet, and to say goodbye. I did so much research when our Abby was diagnosed with bone cancer. The Vet told us that we had two months, and three months later, I wanted to know when was her last day. There was no hard and fast answer. People told me that “I would see it in Abby’s eyes”. I never did. Abby was always so full of love and Waggytude (my new word), right up until her last few minutes. She just kept on wagging that tail of hers and wanted to chase balls even though she was limping badly. After a while, it became clear to me that Abby was hiding her pain. She wanted to stay around, because she knew that we...
TOP 10 REASONS TO ADOPT A SHELTER DOG
One less dog will remain in the shelter. You might find a purebred at a fraction of the price. You can adopt an exotic breed, like a Bali Temple Dog, without leaving the Country. Gives you a reason to call all your friends and family. Babe/Dude magnet—We are talking model quality. You don’t have to worry about any fooling around and making puppies. A good reason to go out for a walk. Someone to talk to. Teaches commitment without joining the military. A good reason to go straight home. Monday, June 11 was named “Just One Day” and the vision was that, for a day, we become a No Kill Nation. Organizations like Animal Wise Radio, No Kill Conference, Animal Ark and No Kill Advocacy Center promoted a day to save pet’s lives. Instead of euthanizing,...

Blog Block
It hurts to cry. I don’t like crying. In my head, I can accept that tears wash the soul clean, and that it’s good for the soul. But in my heart, it hurts. It aches. I made up this cute phrase – Blog Block. That was a neat excuse for not writing. A scholarly way of avoiding writing my Blog. Blog Block is like writer’s block. It’s something that I don’t have to connect with. Because when I start to write about Abby, I cry. And it hurts when I cry. If I cried as a kid, I was told to stop crying. Big boys don’t cry. And so, I tend to stifle the tears. And, in the words of my favorite Pink Floyd song, that’s when “I become comfortably numb.” I wrote my book “Just One More Day” to help me stop being numb. Abby had been diagnosed...
Book Signing at Anything Canine
ANYTHING CANINE Book Signing – April 5, 2012 It was great to see so many people turn out to meet me, buy my book and just chat about their own pet loss experiences. When you get down to the heart of the matter, we all need someone to talk to, to just “let it all out”, to share, and to know that we are not alone in feeling what we feel. Everyone I met last night confirmed that their pet, their friend, was a member of the family, and losing them was one of the toughest things that had ever happened to them. The common thread in my conversations was the guilt that people were feeling – guilt from calling the Vet in too soon, or guilt from waiting too long. I believe 100%, with all my heart, that when we make the decision to say goodbye – is the right...
